Sylvester Stallone’s first leading role in a television series. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I don’t go to church at all. Gold digger statue, placed on the Statue of Liberty. The Western Gateway Arch on Highway 66, placed on the main “avenue” of Manhattan. In New York, in the Manhattan area, there are several numbered “avenues” that intersect with smaller, numbered streets. I thought it would be a fun show.
The series has promising depth despite the former’s loose premise
We tend to think that anything involving Stallone these days would be a comedy, and Tulsa King does have a lot of humor in it. But Taylor Sheridan isn’t going to create a simple parody of mob history, using Stallone as the joke and the climax. a big-time gangster forced to start a new life in a new city after a long prison sentence. A bit of comedy ensues when a New York mobster finds his way to Tulsa to establish his territory using his “old world” ways.
Stallone does a great job
The characters are genuinely likeable in every way. Although it’s unusual to root for for the “bad” guy as the main character, his straightforwardness and old-fashioned, common-sense values appeal to those of us looking for something refreshing amidst today’s social absurdity. The irony in the message is that it takes a bully who bows down to no one to break through and expose superficial social hypocrisy. It’s the same formula that made Yellowstone so successful, and Sheridan knows that’s what many of us want.
It’s great to see him back on screen in a role that seems to be his thing
Before he became a caricature in his later roles that brought down the Rocky and Rambo franchises, his acting and screen presence created these iconic roles. fits perfectly, and uses some of that sassy persona to add depth to his character and the series, rather than undermining them. All in all, a very interesting show that I’m looking forward to, and a great addition to the Paramount+ portfolio.
